Dilemma

Earlier in one of my posts, The Dark Knight's review, I had observed that an hero can be successful only when he has no dependent on him because then he has no weaknesses which can be exploited by others. But it came to my mind today that if hero doesnt have any dependent then where will he get any motivation to to do something like a hero. Without any dependent, he doesnt have any reason to become a hero.

9th dec

we went and met Sanyal Sir at 10. He was expecting some report from us but we had gone there empty handed. In the meeting he also set a deadline of 15th dec to submit sometype of paper on cluster computing. Then we told him that we wanted minimum of 3 computers to create a cluster. For this he asked to wait for Rajkumar sir who would provide us computers. he came at 11'0 clock. he asked us select any computers from the lab.some computers had 3 NIC which was very good for us as we needed minimum 2 NIC in the server. we were more lucky as i found a computer with Fedora 8 OS. we decided to make it as our server. then i installed the oscar packages as was given in the installation guide. but we needed a switch to install oscar in client nodes. so we decided to call it a day. then i came back to room and played aoe. and then watched mahabharath. in the evening, sandeep,santya and kiran went to bench. i wasnt interested as i was very tired. i had plans to go to LH more for dinner. but when they came back, they told me that it was Aunty's shop was closed. So then i decided to prepare Maggi. I had a half packet Maggi. I prepared maggi from it. it was much better than last time. after dinner i again played aoe for sometime and watched mahabharath. then went to sleep.

spirit of media

after the mumbai incident, i got into the habit of watching the videos displayed on "The Times Of India" web page. i would get the latest update on the mumbai incident and how the world is reacting to it. however today when i looked at the video section, the first video wasnt about the mumbai incident. Ironically it was about Katrina Kaif being the sexiest woman for Bristish Inidans according to some poll. That is when i realized the spirit of media which is very much similar to spirit of mumbai. Mumbaikars return back to their normal life even after there is a chain of train blasts the previous day. Similarlly media return backs to the glamour world as soon as possible even after an incidents like Taj-Oberoi hostage situation. Well i think viewers and readers do like glamour more than life-security unlike me.

8th dec

got up at 9:45 after Tanamay woke me up. we had decided to go and meet Sanyal Sir at 10. However just before getting up i was having a dream that i had scored 9.23 in 7th sem. this might have been because of Tanmay constantly saying that it was 9:45 already. somehow i always feel that dreams are always related to what is happening to us at that particular moment. like if someone is throwing water on us while sleeping, we dream that we are drowning or playing rain or something like that.
well we went to dept at 10 and waited for around 30 mins. after that we asked someone in dept where Sanyal Sir was. he told us that Sir was attending the seminar on CERN. So we decided to come back at 3.
when we went at 3, Sanyal Sir was busy with seminars of MCA. after sometime he came out and he saw us waiting for him. he asked us to come at 10. so have to go and meet him tomorrow at 10. then i came back and watched The Lion King- part 2. then started playing AOE. after that went to have dinner at LH more alongwith Santya and Kiran and had Maggi and Bun-Omelette as there was nothing else. then came to room and after sometime went to play Football alongwith Sattu,Ankush, Doon, Harry, Mrinal and others. enjoyed it very much. the teams were North and sandeep vs rest(me,Usuf,Mrinal, Basant and Tudu). we won 6-2. came back at around 1. then after some time went to sleep.

7th dec

quite a good day. after trying to install CentOS for 3 times yesterday, i finally gave up and installed Fedora 8 in Bacchas's CPU. Even that took me 3 times before Fedora was installed successfully. After that, i tried installing basic softwares in it. wasnt successful initially. VLC and SMPLAYER had libpulse dependency problem. after trying for some more time unsuccessfully, i gave up. However then i tried to install OSCAR using the tutorial given in its site. was successful till here. wasnt able to continue as i needed another NIC for that.So I shifted to Windows to play AOE and watch movies. Watched The Lion King-part 1. Downloaded full series of mahabharat which was of total size 22.4gb. then went to LH more to have dinner. then after coming back started watching first episode of mahabharat. then went to sleep.

5th and 6th dec.

Didnt update here as i did nothing useful other than enjoying. On 5th collected the CPU from Baccha as soon as her exam was over. then went to CCD along with VT(host),Dorxana,Baccha and Anjali(the chief guest of the treat). Had a very nice time over there pulling each other's leg. Was beaten by Anjali quite few times, someday will take revenge. Then went to see off Baccha who went to Howrah by bus along with Gandhi and Rama.
On 6th, got up early and had breakfast. then spent time playing cricket in the wing. then in the evening went to see off wingmates those who were going to Goa, Tushar ,Bala, Patil, Vijay and Pa2. Then in the night connected Baccha's CPU to Vijay's monitor. Finally i now have a working computer all for myself after about 2 months. Lappy is still sick.

4th dec

Got up at 12. Went to jupes. Then went to Dept. to meet GS to discuss about our project. After waiting for about half an hour along with Tanmay, Rasheed and Anup, i just remembered that GS might be out of station. So then i asked PKG sir who was available in dept about GS. He informed us that GS was out of station and he would be coming on 8th. We had mixed reactions for this news. On one hand we had got extra time for us do to something on the project, so that when we met him we had something solid to show but also on the other hand, this meant that we would have to stay in Durgapur atleast till 8th. However after that i came back to my room. Talked to Manish and then went to GM along with him and Gautam. Then started cleaning room which had become a complete mess. Spent around 2 hours for cleaning. had dinner. went to techno and then to LH more. Over all didnt do anything worthy.

survey conducted in LH about Linux

Well the wait is finally over and the results of the survey on Linux usage by girls in Ladies Hostels is out. The survey has shown that GLUG-Durgapur has tremendous growth oppurtunity among the girl students. Out of the total 228 girls who participated in the survey, 51 use different distributions of Linux regularly either in their own personal computer or in departments as a part of sessionals. 124 girls want to use install and use linux regularly but they havent still because of lack of basic linux knowledge. Out of the 124, only 19 are from software branches(Computer Science, Information Technology and Master of Computer Applications). This shows that huge number of students of non-software branches are not only becoming aware of presence of Linux but also want to enjoy it. Also according to the survey, ____ out of ____first years want to use linux and nearly 80% of first year girls are registered members of GLUG-Durgapur. Also there are 11 students who are really "linux users" but are not registered member of GLUG-Durgapur.

In case of distribution, Opensuse is the leading Linux distribution among girls. Out of 35 girls who have installed and use linux in their personal computers, 16 use Opensuse, 7 use RedHat Enterprise Limited, 5 use Fedora, 4 use Ubuntu and 3 others forgot to mention the distribution they use, hopefully they dont forget to use linux. Some of the interesting points I found is, one girl uses Opensuse 11.2 version(11.1 is yet to be released), and also some girls use linux distribution called Windows.

Some of the common problems faced by girls while using linux are:-

• Audio and video problem.
• Frequent crash of computer.
• Problems with downloading and installing softwares, like VLC.
• Internet problem.
• Less User friendly.
• Dependencies problems while installing softwares.
• Voice chat softwares like Gtalk not available.

the dark knight ---- viggy's review

I saw the movie about 1-2 months after its release. I was waiting for its DvdRip. I think it is better if i leave the review of the movie to professionals as i wont be able to do justice. I would just say that it is very good as it not only contains every aspect of a movie but all excels in it. Story, sound, dailogues, acting. Everything to perfect. No doubt it is in top 5 in IMDB.

I would like to discuss the role of Joker here. Joker is shown in the movie as a villian who does not do bad stuff for a reason. He does it only because he enjoys it. He doesnt want to earn money or gain power. He just wants to create a chaos. I think he is a saddist and he thinks that every human being in the city just lives for himself without caring about others and they are ready to kill each other to save their own ass. He conducts a what he calls as a social experiment where he keeps bombs in two ferries, one containing civilians and another containing criminals from a jail. He keeps the detonator of the bomb in the ferry containing civilians in the ferry containing criminals and vice versa. Now he says that if either one of them doesnt kill other then he will blow both the ferries. Joker expects both the bombs to explode or at least one to explode and if it did it would prove his idea. However this does not happen and no one from either ferry is interested in blowing other ferry just to save themselves. Strangely i feel that the Joker had not exchanged the detonator and if anyone had tried to blow the other ferry they would end up blowing their own ferry. However i will never come to know whether what i think is right.
I think Joker is not a murderer but he is not afraid of killing anyone who comes in his path. the only problem was that he had chosen a wrong path. This made me think what if Joker hadnt chosen the wrong path. What if he was a person who was ready to kill anyone who comes in his path and his path was to keep the city and world safe and make it a happy place to live. He was perfect for it. He didnt have any dependent and he didnt have any motive other than just creating chaos. So if he had chosen a correct motive, then he would have been a perfect hero.

There is another aspect of the movie which i should mention. The DA of Gotham who also is the present boy friend of Rachel, who is the ex-girl friend of Batman. Batman wanted him to make the new hero of the city who was more real and had deserved to be called hero as he just did his job perfectly and wasnt afraid of its consequences. However there was one problem. He was and had a dependent, Rachel. And this dependency was his weak point which the joker exploited.

well i am a great believer in destiny and i think today was a very good example of it. Somehow i slept yesterday at 10 and woke up at 9(am and not pm). then i found santya's compu unattended and so i sat there and logged in gmail. as soon as i logged in, Shainky pinged me and we chatted for some time. she told me that she was planning to go to Langar held at gurudwara as it was Gurunanak Jayanthi and she invited me to come along with her group. I wasnt very interested at first, but later when she told that Sultan and Singla would go, i also thought of going. Then i invited Dabba to come along with us and so he also joined us, ofcourse with his better half,Dhakan.

We reached gurudwara and bowed in front of GuruGrantSahib, the holy book of Sikhs. Then we sat little while to listen to the songs that were being sung by the group at the dias. It was nice soothing music. After listening to it for 10 mins, we got up to join the queue for the people who were waiting for the langar lunch. Our plan was to become volenteers first, and after some time to have our lunch. However it wasnt as easy as we had planned. Very obviously there were many volenteers there and so we were asked to wait. The wait as always was very long and what made it longer was that the wait for really around 45 mins long. And after we crossed the first gate, we not only had to wait longer but we started suffocating also. However it was totally worth it.

Firstly, I got to see Baccha in suit and she really looked beautiful. Secondly, I got to do what i always like, volenteer. Thirdly, it reminded me my days in mangalore car festival where i used to volenteer to distribute food items. ofcourse there i used to distribute the one which is most easy, the laddo, u just give one to each and people are ready with their hands cupped to catch it. But with curry items, it is difficult as u have to serv the right amount and also keep asking if they require more of it. However today i selected the difficult part as there was no easy way out. So i started distributing daal. I distributed for around 15 mins and then sat for lunch myself.

Lunch consisted of roti, daal, aalo ki sabji, rice and prasad. It was very tasty and since we were very hungry, the food became more tastier. After lunch, i again started distributing for some time and then we came back to hostel.

If i had not slept early last night, i wouldnt get the chance to visit langar at all.

dabba's secret blog

i was thinking about should i also maintain a secret blog unknown to anyone other than me. but i didnt find any reason to do so. infact i found why it will be a mistake for me to do so. as far as i know myself, i keep very little secret inside my stomach and most of "should be kept" secrets are known to one or other friends of mine. so it is deffinetly not a reason for me to maintain such a blog. another reason why someone can maintain a blog is to write down some of the most bad things he has imagined or would like to do but isnt allowed to do in normal life. but then, i think, if those are bad things why should anyone think about it, more-over spend time thinking and writing about it in a blog. while thinking this is when i realized that the most horrible things done or imagined by one which he would like to keep it as a secret are the ones he committed when he was alone.

this reminded me of the shloka in sanskrit--" the crime committed when one is alone, is the one which haunts the person most".

that is one plus point i feel christianity has. their tradition of confession in church is very good to get free from such horrible experiences.

heaven so near

i feel like i am writing this from heaven. this might just be silly but i thought that i should mention it here. i luckily got a chance of laying my hands on dabba's philips headphone and i wanted to listen to kailash kher's saiyyan and tu meri jaan hai. Coincidentally the volume was maximum. the first line i heard made me reach heaven, that i swhen i thought i should enter this in my blog.

being non-alchoholic

It seems that I might be the last person in our group who has not tasted alcohol yet. Well I dont say it as an achievement as I have not gained anything from this, other than a little self esteem that I still have some part of my brain under my control. However the war so far against so called bad habits (i no longer think controlled drinking and smoking is a bad habit but anything in excess is bad and i think smoking and drinking habits are more prone to reach that level) hasnt always been one-sided and there have been times where in the barrier was almost broken, but luckily that time has not yet come.

condition better than last time

last time i wrote in this blog, i was feeling very sad and disappointed with life. this time the situation has not improved any better. but i know the reason why i am feeling so. i havent been doing any good with my studies and that is why being treated as a waste body by everyone. however as always i am waiting for my time and i know it is going to come soon. just need to be very careful so that i dont do anything very foolish so that i loose any good friends. just want to complete my final year as soon as possible with some passing marks. have got bored of this daily life of leaving without any purpose. present plan is to start studying for CAT but again finding very little interest to do so. however the good thing that has happened between the last time i wrote in this blog and now is, i have gained good information about share market and trading. will try to collect more and more info about it.

living without any purpose

it is about a week now since i started feeling like this. havent been doing any thing lately. just trying to get involved in whatever i find little interesting but unfortunately havent found anything much also. i watch movies but am never interested in it. i had thought IOTA would give me some chance to work on something seriously but unfortunately it is being postponed. I think this will continue till i reach back home on 28th. will have lots of things to do there. especially since i have my cousin bro's marriage to attend. let us see how it turns out.

My campus placement record--- mostly about how i got rejected in different companies :(

26th March -- TCS(package--Rs. 3.15 Lakhs pa)
TCS was the first company to come for recruitment for our year in the college and also the first company that i tried for. So my journey of campus placement started from it. Written was cool and easy, a piece of cake in fact. Most of the questions were easy and verbal section which i have always been weak had already answers marked in the question paper. So i got selected for interview. It was my first interview since my interview of NTSE which was way back in 2003. So i was little nervous, what made me more nervous was the wait of around 6-7 hours. So when i my name was called at last for the interview, I just wanted to go and give the interview and finish it off and i no longer thought of the result. The interview room was a big hall with around 5 tables kept little away from each other. So at a time, 5 students were being interviewed by 5 different panels. I was interviewed by a panel which consisted of 2 members. Both of them looked friendly. But I was so nervous, that when I was asked to tell about myself, I simply babbled something which overall had very little sense. I first told about my branch and some personal details. Then i told them about my schooling which obviously wasnt at all needed. I told them something about studying in Varanasi and Hubli. Then I started telling them that I am interested in Opensource projects and that I am an active member of NITDGPLUG. While telling them this, I was so nervous that i forgot the name "NITDGPLUG" and had to think for few seconds before telling them the name. This must have given them an idea how active member I was of NITDGPLUG. Then I told them about my intrests in Sudoku and puzzle solving. When I said so, one of the interviewer said that he will ask me a puzzle. He asked me about the why -1=1 when you find its square and then square root them again. I just told him that since we were finding the square-root of a number we were bringing the possiblity of both positive and negative numbers into the answer and only one of them is right, which in this case is 1. Then he asked me if i knew C and C++ programming languages. I told him yes and so he asked me the definitions of some technical features of C++. I told him in my own words, some of them right and those which i didnt knew properly, i told him how much I knew and then said that i didnt know anything more. Then he asked me to write a program to sort an array using bubble-sort. I wrote some code, but didnt check it with any values. Then he asked me if I was sure and then he asked me to check it once using an example and also explain it to him. When I tried to explain it to him using an example, i found that i hadnt written that program correctly and i tried to correct it. He gave me some more time to correct it and asked me to explain it again. After that, He told me to always check a program with an example before saying it is right. The he asked me what subjects i have learnt in my college. I told him mot of the subjects i had learnt till then. He asked me if I knew DBMS properly, I said no. The he asked what else I knew. I told about OS and unix. I told them that i have been using Opensuse10.3 regularly. They asked me many questions from Unix and its commands. I asnwered most of them as i had used most of them myself. Well that was the end of interview. I had very less hope of getting into TCS after the interview because i knew that i had screwed it big time. The only hope I had was that i am from Comp Sci and they might give some preference to me. And that is what happened. TCS took 200 students from our college and I was one of them.
30th July---Tejas Networks(package-Rs.5.5 Lakhs pa)
Well Reddy had asked me to prepare seriously for this company as he had said that not many prefer it and there is a very good chance of getting into it if i knew networks properly. I had taken his suggestion seriously and had studied networks lectures in holidays. However, I wasnt eligible to sit in it when it visited our college as it had kept a cut-off of 7.5 CGPA. So it rejected me.
4th August---NOVELL(package-Rs.6 Lakhs pa)
Before Novell came to our college, there was a lot of confusion in our department. It seems that Novell had asked for a list of 40 students available and ofcourse these 40 students were selected on the basis of their CGPA. And i stand at 52nd-53rd position in our dept according to CGPA. and since some of them werent intrested and some of them had got placed in Tejas, I had somehow reached the 44th position and still had to convince 4 students above me in the list, to not to appear for the company so that i cold get a place in the list. However i wasnt interested in any such business. But still i thought of atending the PPT of Novell and in the PPT, no conditions were told and hence i was able to write the written exam. Actually, according to me, this was the only company in which i had a very very bleak chance of getting selected as i had tried to do an internship in Novell during summer, though i hadnt done anything useful. However written according to me was easy and there was also an essay to write about linux in it. So i wrote about how i have been using linux for past 8 months and reason why i was relutant to shift to linux because of addiction to AOE and blah blah..... End result was that i couldnt clear its written. So again I got rejected.

SAMSUNG-- wasnt interested as i didnt like the work we had to do there.
CSC--wasnt interested as its package was very less.
AMAZON--wasnt allowed to sit. because of low CGPA.
MICROSOFT--since the written was subjective, couldnt clear it.
ONMOBILE--had lots of hopes to get into it as the its written consisted of only puzzles. luckily cleared the first round, but i did it only because i had copied the answers from Shilpa. however my puzzle solving ability was tested and i came to know the reality in the second round. I didnt clear it and i was sure of it after the test itself.

My 20th bday

Well my bday didnt start very well as I had badly injured my foot during the evening and then when my dear friends showered their love in form of GPLs, it was just like a applying salt on a burn. However when i saw the 2 cakes kept beside eachother, I really felt very good for a moment. I remembered the days of my school where the bday boys and girls would stand together on one part f the stage and others would sing the bday song for them. I was sharing my bday party with someone after many years and I felt really special. Well that was just the start of my wonderful bday. After the party, I watched the movie 1971, a movie about the Indian prisoners of war of the 1971 war and how they are tortured in pakistani prisons.
Then in the morning, VT asked me if i was interested in going to 89 cinemas to watch "Rock On". Even though it is a wonderful movie, I wasnt interested in watching it again(I had already watched it 2 days ago). So I again went back to sleep. And around 12:30 i got Dabba askes me to come to CC from where he had decided to go to Panagarh dhaba which around 30 mins form there. Since I wasnt interested in having lunch in mess or in jupes or in techno as that would mean more GPLs, I immediately agreed. Then I alongwith Manish and Topo joined Dabba, Gautam and VT in CC. Then we climbed on the top of the bus, not caring about the sun who was showing his full power. After we reached the dhaba, the first impression of everyone except me wasnt very good. Since i was the only one who had been there earlier, I tried to encourage them by saying that the food which to other's disappointment was only vegetarian, was very good and it was worth the trouble we had taken. When the waiter told us about the menu, I was surprised. The dhaba offered only 4 type of sabjis and no paneer items. Well we took it as our fate and ordered the sabjis. Again to our disaapointment, the food quality wasnt very good. However we ate our stomach full and ordered lassis, which wasnt again not very good and lacked the thickness that the dhabas are famous for. Then after paying the bills, we waited for the bus. This time, Dabba asked everyone to enter inside the bus but when we were climbing the bus, the bus-driver who was in a hurry started the bus and VT and Gautam couldnt board the bus. We got down at CC and then decied to have fruit juices till VT and Gautam come by the next bus. After we had our juices, we called them and they told us that they were coming back on a truck and they would directly go to college. So we decied to go back to college and suddenly we noticed that a group of around 100 girls were coming towards us. Well for a moment everyone was shocked. Then we decided to have a good look at all the girls and so we stood on a side as all the girls passed by. They were being lead by a Professor and mostly they were first year girls of some college who had come for shopping with their prof to avoid ragging. However, as most of us are frustated enough,, we decided to follow them and we entered Big B. But as soon as they entered Big B, they spreaded and we werent able to talk to any one of them. So disappointed we decided to go back to college. However our adventure wasnt over. On the way, some drunk guy started following us. He asked Manish if he had worked in any movie recently and he looked like some Kapoor whose movie was recently released. Apparently he was talking about Ranbir Kapoor. However, we asked him to go back to his house and asked him to stop following us. However he was very reluctent and we were about to thrash him badly, but he stopped and went back.
I was very tired after this trip to dhaba and was very reluctent to meet Baccha. But since I also had to go to temple and I wanted to spent sometime with her during my Bday, I went to meet her at 7 at LH more. We went to Kali Bari(Benachity) in a cycle rickshaw. She was reluctent to enter the temple but again i had to force her to enter the temple. While i was praying near the shrine, she was standing near the enterance like a student who is made to stand in the staff-room as a punishment(I have experienced it ). Then we caught a bus and went to her favourite eating place in CC, Wonder-Vatika. All the time we were there, i was wondering why she liked this vatika so much. However from there we went to CCD and after requesting to have something, she gave her order. Just when we got what we had ordered, I got a call from Santya asking me to bring bday cake for Pa2, as we had to celebrate his bday in the night. After buying the cake, I left her at her hostel and returned back to my room. And i thought it was the end of all the importent events of my bday. But it wasnt. At around 11:45, I just thought of checking my mails and in my inbox I saw that, the patch which i had submitted for a bug in evolution around 2 weeks ago had been accepted and it was added in a revision to the trunk version of evolution. Also my name was mentioned in the Change Log file. What a perfect ending of an wonderful bday.

Happy Days-- did not make me very happy

When I downloaded the movie from dc++, as I had heard very good comments from non-gulty friends. That was the main reason why i thought of watching it. I had great expectations from the movie but unfortunately, it was not upto my expectations.
The story is about 8 students,4 boys and 4 girls who have just joined an engineering college. They become friends because of the ragging process that they face and in very little time they become very close friends. Till now, it was fine. But then the ragging gets intensified and surprisingly, one of them slaps a senior. That was the first incident which took the film away from reality. And the reason was because even the senior was behind the girl and he was using seniority funda and forcing her to come with him for a movie. And amazingly, to settle this matter between juniors and seniors, someone i dont know whom, comes in between and arranges a meeting and in that meeting they decide to settle this matter in a way simple manner, a cricket match. Well i suppose everyone had just watched Lagaan and when Britishers can agree to decide matters by the result of a cricket match, then why shouldnt the college students follow the same. After all, for every system in India, we follow the British style. Well my disappointment doesnt end here.
During the cricket match, in which the seniors have State level players(as in all movies), there is a fat boy in the senior team and to lure him, what the juniors do is throw a boiled egg on the ground in which they mix some drugs (I dont know which one, but i surely would buy loads of those drugs!!). And the fat boy picks it up from the ground during the match and eats it(what happened to hygiene!). The effect of the drug is that instead of fielding the ball, he kicks it outside the boundary line(Sorry, i forgot to say, The fat boy is fielding at boundary!!Imagine Inzamam ul haq fielding at boundary, India would have won so many matches). And after all this, junior team wins the match and guess what it is the end of their ragging period. You see, we werent so lucky. Even our year guys had won the college cricket tournament in first year but till then our ragging period was already over :(.
After all this bullshit which made me loose all the interest I had on the movie, the story goes on like any other movie involving friends. there is some difference among friends and then they fight amongt eachother. In between there is also fight in between all the couples and blah blah blah.
The only good thing that i found was the way they show how all these friends in their final year, concentrate on their futures and the way they show how all of them are sad for leaving the college. Well i might have liked it because even now i am in my final year of engineering. However i always try to find some good point in any thing, and this is what i found in this movie.
Also please remember that i have not discussed about the boy is in love with a senior right from the first day of the college and how one of them proposes a college teacher who reacts by showing him a box which contains all the love letters she recieved from her students(hehehehehe) and also the way the placements are held in their college.

In short, I would say even though the frist 15 mins and the last half an hour was good enough and the theme was wonderful and different, the writer sadly fucked the story in middle.

I would give it a rating of 5/10. But again the theme was good but it was badly put into a story.

what i counldnt do in around 15 days, was done in one hour

today atlast i have fixed the bug in Evolution . I had tried fixing this bug in my holidays for around 15 days. But due to some or other reason evolution used to crash with whatever code i had written. At the beginning, I was trying to destroy the categories-dailog and restart it. But later, after jjonny's advice, I tried to reorder the list instead of restarting the dailog. But still I was not able to write any correct code. However, today I dont know how I did it.

I slept at around 2 am(strange considering that i had spent night-outs for last 8 days). I was feeling so sleepy that i thought it was best to sleep. But I woke up at 4:45 am. Since I had nothing to do for entertainment(due to some missing dependencies, I have not been able to install any video player in Opensuse 11), I thought I should try to fix the bug. So I again started to write fresh code to fix the bug, as I had re-installed Opensuse and due to my foolishness, I had lost all my previous codes. After about half an hour, I had completed writing about 15 lines of code which was very similar to codes that i had tried earlier. And when i re-builded Evolution, strangely the bug was fixed.

Ofcourse, now i have to see whether my patch will be accepted. If it is accepted, then it will be my first bug that i have fixed successfully. let us see.

philosophy

today Debayan made an excellent comparison of soul and body with software and hardware. it made so much sense. if hardware stops working, software disappears. but without software, hardware does not have any purpose. it is just some matter. but with software, it gains a purpose and becomes a machine. similarly, body without soul(after death) is just some matter without any purpose. but when body is alive, it runs due to some software which we call as soul. ofcourse, the software associated with the body is highly architecture specific and its future highly depends on the environment in which the hardware is present. also, the software continuosly changes the hardware. now getting more deeper, let us think about the main memory and secondary memory. I think the role of main memory and secondary memory is played by heart and brain, not necessarily in same order. ofcourse, what is what changes from person to person. people keeping everything in their heart and listening to brain, use brain as main memory and heart as secondary memory. but people using their brain to store memories and who listen to their heart, use heart as main memory and brain as secondary memory.
another importent observation is that there is no restart option. you can just put it to stand by for sometime by sleeping or you can shutdown only once.

How to download video that you watch on online?

Before discussing different ways to download video, let me first tell you that in most of the ways i am going to discuss, you will have to spend time watching that video online atleast once.

To download videos from youtube
For this, view the video online completely once, or atleast let it buffer completely while you spend time working on something else. Then go to the cache folder of your Browser and search for a file with .flv format. The name of the file might be anything. This is the video which you wanted to download. Copy it to any different folder before closing the Browser as the cache might be deleted after you close the Browser. You can view the .flv format video in any FLV Player or VLC.




To download videos from other sites 

For this, just follow as discussed above. When you open cache folder of Browser, instead of .flv format video, you might find files of .swf format and when you try to play it on your media player, you might just not get any clear video. Dont worry, just open the file with your Browser and you can watch the video.



To download videos without watching it (It might not work on most of the sites)
For this, open the site from where the video can be watched online. Then look into the source of the webpage. If you are lucky, you might just find a complete link of a .flv format file. Copy and paste the link in a new tab in your Browser. The Browser will ask permissions to download the file. After the file is fully downloaded, you can enjoying watching it using any Flv player. This method works only on non-commercial webpages in which the user has shared the video for free for the public to watch it.


So now enjoy downloading videos.

 

just thinking

I just completed watching all 3 parts of Godfather. No doubt they are counted in the list of best movies ever made. Wonderful story and so well directed and acted. Over all a very good movie. I was just thinking about the way it ended. Michael lost his daughter whom he had always thought of protecting. I am going to describe about some roles in the movie and how i understood them.

I think about the 3 gangsters, Vito Corleone, Santino Corleone and Micheal Coleone. Vito Corleone was a very good person by heart and i liked the way he ruled. His decision to go against supporting Drug dealing was right but as we know it had very bad consequences on him and his family. This again raises an importent moral question. Can a person try to be good while working along with bad persons? This is a very importent question and i am sure you would agree with me if i say that a definite yes or no for this question cannot be given. Santino, on the other hand,was a person who loved his family very much, but he was a person who had power but not the patience to think before useing it which ultimately made him loose his life.

Now the main character, Micheal Corleone, a gangster who never wanted to be a gangster, but had to become a gangster to protect his family. He liked his father very much but didnt like his father's work. But still he got involved when his father needed him. So now let me share with you the moral question that i have always been thinking about. What do you do when someone whom you like very much but is superior to you (in some or other way) is doing wrong? You have only 2 option, either support him in whatever wrong deed he is doing or leave him and try to lead your own life leaving all concerns about the person. Micheal's daughter choose the first option and was killed whereas his son choose the second option and became a good musician. Both loved their father very much but choose different way to show their love. So which is right? What would his son do if Micheal was shot instead of his daughter and was badly injured?

We find similar examples in both Ramayan and Mahabharta. In Ramayan, we see how Bharath cuts off all his relationship with his mother for being so unjust to his brother Ram. Where as in Mahabharta, due to the support Dhritarastra gives to his son, Duryodhana, he loses not only all his sons but also his dynasty is washed off completely. So history and also as in Godfather suggests that, it is always good for you to leave a person who is very much involved in his bad deeds.

Wonderful Divisibility Rule

I had always appreciated the orderness of decimal number system. And that is why i always believed that even number 7 should have a divisibility rule. And with this belief, i had tried many times to find it. Well i had actually never tried seriously, i spent time thinking on it only when i had nothing else to do like when i was travelling on the train or on the bus or when i was sitting idle in my village. However I never succeeded in getting any closer to a solution.
But still i maintained my belief. And i was awarded for it when i was once looking into tutorial for programming in basic c++ in topcoder here. After going through the tutorial, i looked into the sample programming problems . That is when i found this problem statement and the wonderful theory about decimal number system. The theory stated that, for a 'n'-digit number,x, to be divisble by a number 'p', there should exist a set of numbers a={a1,a2,a3...,an; a1=1, ai<=p} y=(X1.a1)+(X2.a2)+(X3.a3)+....+(Xn.an),

is divisible by p where X1,X2,X3 are the n digits of the number x. For example, in case of 7, a1=1,a2=3,a3=2,a4=6,a5=4,a6=5.... Consider X=357, so X1=7,X2=5,X3=3. So

y = (X1.a1) +(X2.a2)+(X3.a3)
= (7.1)+(5.3)+(3.2)
= 7+15+6
= 28 which is divisble by 7.
Hence X=357 is divisible by 7.

This divisbility rule can be applied to any number and is very useful if to find whether a big number is divisible by a another big prime number. I still have not understood the rule completely like what is the reason behind it and whether there exist a proof for such rule. But,really, I was very happy to know this proof. It just requires that you know the number set, a.
Also finding the number set,a, is very easy. For Example, consider that we have to find the number set,a, for p=13. We know that,always, a1=1. Also for any n-digit number, p, ai=pow(10,i), where i<=n. Hence in this case, a1=1,a2=10. To find a3, consider a 3-digit number which is divisible by 13, like 117. So X1=7,X2=1,X3=1. Hence y=(1.a3)+(1.10)+(7.1). So now solve the above Equation by substituting values for a3 which are less than 13, such that y is divisible by 13. We find a unique solution, which is, 9. Following the same method, we find for p=13, a1=1,a2=10,a3=9,a4=12,a5=3.

wget: wonderful utility to download web-pages to surf offline

wget is a nice tool for downloading resources from the internet. The basic usage is wget url:

wget http://linuxreviews.org/

Therefore, wget (manual page) + less (manual page) is all you need to surf the internet. The power of wget is that you may download sites recursive, meaning you also get all pages (and images and other data) linked on the front page:

wget -r http://linuxreviews.org/

But many sites do not want you to download their entire site. To prevent this, they check how browsers identify. Many sites refuses you to connect or sends a blank page if they detect you are not using a web-browser. You might get a message like:

Sorry, but the download manager you are using to view this site is not supported. We do not support use of such download managers as flashget, go!zilla, or getright

Wget has a very handy -U option for sites like this. Use -U My-browser to tell the site you are using some commonly accepted browser:

  wget  -r -p -U Mozilla http://www.stupidsite.com/restricedplace.html

The most important command line options are --limit-rate= and --wait=. You should add --wait=20 to pause 20 seconds between retrievals, this makes sure you are not manually added to a blacklist. --limit-rate defaults to bytes, add K to set KB/s. Example:

wget --wait=20 --limit-rate=20K -r -p -U Mozilla http://www.stupidsite.com/restricedplace.html

A web-site owner will probably get upset if you attempt to download his entire site using a simple wget http://foo.bar command. However, the web-site owner will not even notice you if you limit the download transfer rate and pause between fetching files.

Use --no-parent

--no-parent is a very handy option that guarantees wget will not download anything from the folders beneath the folder you want to acquire. Use this to make sure wget does not fetch more than it needs to if just just want to download the files in a folder.

Fund system followed in my village to share money among businessmen

I came to know about this when i had gone along with my cousin-brother, Charan, for collection of money from his clients to whom he supplies banana as a wholesale dealer. After collecting money from some of his clients, he parked the bike near a hardware store. I went along with him inside the store which was packed with all sorts of electrical appliances. After looking around for a while, I saw that 2 men were sitting in a corner and another person was standing beside them. After listening to them for a while, i came to know that they were bidding on something and one of the person sitting was the auctioneer. He was increasing the amount as either the other person sitting or the person standing would make some indication. The bid amount had reached around Rs. 7500. The bidding process was going on very quietly and only the auctioneer was mentioning the amount very slowly. This made me very suspicious as to what they were bidding for. However Charan called me and said that we had to go to one more of his clients. I asked him what the 2 persons were bidding for. He told me that they were bidding for Rs. 1 lakh. He explained to me that the system is called FUND SYSTEM. A group of people, exactly 40, who are basically businessmen and who know each other very well, together make the fund system. Each one of them agrees to deposit Rs. 2500 every week which totals up into Rs. 1 lakh. So now anyone of them can borrow that money and use it for his business. He has to return it compulsorily after a stipulated time. All this happens on the basis of trust on each other. However if there are more than one person who wants that money for that week,which always happens(any businessman would want more money in his pocket), a bidding process takes place where both of them can bid for it in front of some other member of group who volenteers to become the auctioneer and the maximum bidder wins. For example, if a person bids at Rs.7500, it means that he is going to get only Rs. 92500, and still payback Rs. 1 lakh after the stipulated time. Charan told me that he also was a member of that fund sytem and he had actually gone to that store to pay his weekly dues, Rs. 2500. I asked him if he also takes out money from the Fund. He told me that he normally takes the money only when the bid price is very low. He added that the maximum bid varies from Rs. 800 - Rs. 8000. And then we reached one of his client's shop and so he stopped the bike and he went to the store to collect money.
I still have lots of doubts about the Fund system like:

1. What happens to Bid price?
2. What is the stipulated time?
3. When does he get back the money he has invested?

I will ask him when i next go to village and clear all the doubts. This surely looks like a very system where local businessmen can help each other but as i had mentioned earlier a lot depends on trust on each other.

re-installed suse, due to some bonobo-slay problem

Well the problem i faced is exactly the same as descibed here.
Of course, the only difference was that i use opensuse10.3 distro and gnome as my desktop manager.

it all started when i tried to upgrade "Evolution" manually. But it had some dependencies missing, one of which was some bonobo file. i found it thru google and tried to manually install it also. however again i got some missing dependencies. and so i left it thinking i will try it later.
however when i started my laptop the next day, it worked perfectly well till the login screen. after i logged in as user, i got a pop-up message same as described in above link. unfortunate as i was, i didnt have internet connection that time and so couldnt search about it on the net. however i tried few things like the command bonobo-slay which was suggested in the pop-up message. however it didnt help. so then i thought of using the second suggestion mentioned in the pop-up which was to re-install "Nautilus"(it is a file manager, similar to explorer in windows). now since i had no idea how to reinstall a software in linux thru a terminal, so i tried experimenting with zypper command. i tried the command "zypper install nautilus" which gave the result as nautilus was already installed which was obvious. then i read the manual of zypper, in which it was mentioned that to remove a software i could use rm command. and what i did next costed me about 2 days and due to which i had to reinstall suse. i tried the command "zypper rm nautilus" which asked me to confirm and also mentioned that it would free about 500mb of space. i should have cancelled the command as it was obvious that it would remove many more files but in my haste, i confirmed it and slowly i saw as many files related to gnome was removed. i then knew that i will have to re-install suse very soon. that was when i realized something else. i had not brought the opensuse10.3 dvd while coming back home. well i knew, i was in a very bad situation. so immediately i called my bro and asked if he could arrange a suse dvd from his friends. he told me that his friends had only Fedora8 dvd and i might get it after a week. well i accepted it as my worst case.
so again i started experimenting. in the evening, as soon as it was 9pm, i started my bro's desktop which is in a very bad shape as it gets shut down automatically without any warning(sometimes doesnt even allow me to complete a single AOE match), i searched about the problem in google and that is when i found the above link. i tried as was told in the link. however i didnt know how to re-install nautilus-data, so i then logged in IRC. to my despair, kushal wasnt in #dgplug that day and so i couldnt expect any help from him. so i join #suse and #opensuse-gnome. when i asked my doubt in #suse, i got replies but they were unable to help as most of them used KDE as desktop manager. However i got a reply from a guy named hpj in #opensuse-gnome. and then for next about 5 hours, he tried to help me correct nautilus. it was really nice to see how a guy whom i barely knew spend so much time helping me, which made me understand why Open Source is going to rule the future. Everyone wants to learn and an easy way to learn is by teaching others. however geting back to my topic, even after spending so much time i wasnt able to repair my damaged system and i knew i will have to wait till i get fedora8 dvd.
however next morning i called up my school mate manu who is presently studying in NIT-K, and asked if he could arrange a opensuse dvd from his friends. well he surprised me by saying that he himself had the dvd which he had got along with Digit magazine. so i went to his house immediately and brought it and re-installed opensuse10.3.

however i learnt a lot of things by this venture.

1. Never try to install files randomly, use yast. also i learnt that you can use yast thru terminal also.
   
2. Also i learnt after i re-installed suse that my other drive which was also in ext3 format had all the data intact and i could easily access it. this gave me the idea that if i kept all my importent files in this drive i wouldnt loose it even if i had fucked my drive in which suse was installed. this actually is a very obvious thing and many of linux users might have known it right in their beginning days of using linux. however it took me about 8 months(during which i have installed suse around 8 times) to realize this.
3. Everytime i re-installed suse, i had audio problem as my sound card was not recognized and some default card was used. however after some googling, i found here that apart from Alsa, i also needed to install Alsa-firmware which was needed for some older sound cards. I did as was told on the site and i got the audio working properly.

this was what i experienced in last 2 days. please note that i am still a noob at using linux, so please dont laugh at my silly but costly ventures. Also i would like to mention that i am also a noob at maintaing a blog, so please ignore any mistakes as a blogger i might have made.
